More information
The story of the painting's creation “Tancred and Erminia” by Nicolas Poussin.
Nicolas Poussin was very attracted to the knightly poem of Torquato Tasso «Liberated Jerusalem», full of magical adventures, unexpected and confusing collisions. Many of the artist’s paintings are inspired by Tasso’s poems.
Poussin addressed one of the episodes of the poem «Liberated Jerusalem» twice. One of the variants of the picture on the plot «Tancred and Erminia» is kept in the Hermitage. A later and more well-known author’s version is at the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham.
Herminia, in love with Tancred’s knight, finds him wounded after a fight with the giant Argant. The squire Wafrin lifts Tancred’s immobile body from the ground, and Herminius, in an unbridled rush of love and compassion, cuts off his hair with the sword to bandage the knight’s wounds.
The painting «Tancred and Erminia» was purchased for the Hermitage in 1766 from the collection of the artist Aved in Paris, at auction. Exhibited in hall 279
