Rich neighborhood in London.

Richmond, a neighborhood located in southwest London, has a long and storied history that dates back to ancient times. In the 11th century, William the Conqueror built a royal palace at Shene, which became a favorite residence of the English monarchs. The palace was later expanded and renamed Richmond Palace, after the Earl of Richmond. The name "Richmond" is believed to have derived from "Riche-monte," meaning "strong hill."

During the Tudor period, Richmond Palace flourished as a royal residence. It was particularly favored by Henry VII and Elizabeth I, who made extensive renovations to the palace. However, by the 17th century, the palace fell into decline and was eventually dismantled during the English Civil War.

In the 18th century, Richmond began to transform into a desirable suburban retreat for wealthy Londoners. The construction of Richmond Bridge in 1777 improved access to the area, and elegant Georgian townhouses were built. The arrival of the railway in 1846 further increased Richmond's appeal as a residential suburb.
