Abu Abbas Ahmad I was enthroned by the Hafsid sultan Abu Faris Abd al-Aziz after the deposition of Abu Abdullah II. He was well received by the population, and began his rule well, but gradually began to lose power, some tribal leaders took over the provinces, while the Berbers and Arabs revolted.

Soon, the rebel forces approached Algeria and occupied the city on January 5, 1439. Abu Zayan Muhammad al-Mustaine entered the city, and al-Mutawakkil captured Mitija and Medea. He later grabbed Miliana and attacked Tenes, who surrendered without a fight. Abu Zayyan Muhammad al-Mustaine and al-Mutawakkil declared themselves independent rulers, but on March 7, 1440, a rebellion broke out in Algeria, and Abu Zayan was killed. Al-Mutawakkil was then in Tenes and held power everywhere except Algeria, but the forces gradually began to fade.
