Godfrey de Saint-Omer is a Flemish knight, one of the founders of the Knights Templar.

According to rumors have come from a family of Lords of St. Omer, possibly the son of Lord William I of St Omer. According to chronology, Godfrey may have been Hugh’s brother, but it is believed that he was his son.

The list of crusaders lists Gaultier de Saint-Omer, which may have been a mistake, and it was actually Godfrey, since Gaultier de Saint-Omer was not born at the time. Godfrey probably came to Jerusalem in 1099 with William and Hugh.

During the First Crusade with Knight Hugh de Payne in 1119, he organized a militia of poor Knights of Christ in the service of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. In 1129, this militia was transformed into a new Order, known as the Order of the Temple Knights. He travelled with Hugh de Payne from Jerusalem to France to raise funds for the new Order.

In 1127 he was in Rome with Pope Honorius III, trying to organize a new crusade. In 1130, he returned to Jerusalem with Hugh de Payne, who managed to collect a large sum from the King of England. He later became Duke of Thebes, where he died.

According to legend, Hugues de Payens (the first Grand-Master of the Templars) and Godfrey were so poor that between the two of them they had only one horse, and this gave rise to the famous image on the seal of the Templars, of two men riding a single horse.
