More information
Iceland’s highest peak.
Hvannadalshnjúkur is the highest peak in Iceland and is located within the Öræfajökull volcano in the southeastern part of the country. With an elevation of 2,110 meters (6,923 feet), it is not only the highest summit in Iceland but also the highest point in the entire North Atlantic region.
Hvannadalshnjúkur is part of the Vatnajökull National Park, which encompasses a significant portion of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe by volume. The peak itself is a prominent feature of the glacier and is often covered in ice and snow. Reaching the summit of Hvannadalshnjúkur requires mountaineering skills and appropriate equipment, as it involves traversing crevassed terrain and steep slopes. It is generally recommended that climbers have prior experience and seek the assistance of experienced guides.
Despite its challenging nature, climbing Hvannadalshnjúkur is a popular activity for experienced mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts visiting Iceland.
