So here we have the North Korean chon, nominal - 50. The year of issue of this coin is 1978, mint: Pyongyang, North Korea.
A Chollima (literally "thousand-mile horse"), is a mythical winged horse which originates from the Chinese classics and is commonly portrayed in East Asian cultures. This winged horse is said to be too swift and elegant to be mounted (by any mortal man). In the period of reconstruction following the Korean War Chollima was the symbol inspiring the North Korean workers to rebuild their nation, then there was coined a term ‘Chollima Speed’.
The Chollima Statue symbolizes "heroism, the constant, fighting spirit of the Korean people, and the innovations and advance so quickly, at the speed of the Chollima".
The monument was constructed as a gift to Kim Il-sung. It was built by the Merited Sculpture Production Company of the Mansudae Art Studio. The statue was unveiled on 15 April 1961, the 49th birthday of Kim Il-sung.
Chollima is 46 meters tall in total. The sculpture stands 14 meters high and is 16 meters long, are 7 meters and 6.5 meters tall, respectively. The figures are made of bronze, while the base is granite.
