A postcard that ridicules the Scottish dialect and its brief history.
Scots is the collective name for Scottish dialects known also as ‘Doric’, ‘Lallans’ and ‘Scotch’ or by more local names such as ‘Buchan’, ‘Dundonian’, ‘Glesca’ or ‘Shetland’. Taken altogether, Scottish dialects are called the Scots language.
The Scots language, within Scotland, consists of four main dialects known by the names Insular, Northern, Central, and Southern. These dialect regions were first defined back in the 1870's.
The postcard says:
Tourist. – I say, Jarvey what are those figures up there?
Carman. – Och, Sir thim`s the Twelve Apostles!!
Tourist. – Twelve Apostles! Oh, Nonsense! Why there are only three!
Carman. – Sure, yer honner wouldn`t want thim all out at once. – That’s The Post-Office, - and the Rest is inside, sortin` the letthers!!
