The coin was issued in conjunction with the 1998 FIFA World Cup held in France. On the obverse of the coin is shown the official logo of the event.

The finals tournament was held in France from 10 June to 12 July 1998. The country was chosen as the host nation by FIFA for the second time in the history of the tournament, defeating Morocco in the bidding process. It was the second time that France staged the competition (the first was in 1938) and the ninth time that it was held in Europe. Spanning 32 days, it is the longest World Cup tournament ever held.

The reverse depicts the footballer of the Uruguayan national football team, and is signed: «Uruguay 1930, 1950». It was during these years that the Uruguayan national football team became world champions. It is interesting that the first ever World Cup was in 1930 held in Uruguay. The first World Cup in its history was won at home by Uruguay.
