During World War II, British Ceylon assumed strategic importance, and in 1942 the Ceylon National Congress decided to obtain a promise from the English colonial authorities to consider granting Ceylon self-government after the war. As agreed, the Soulbury Commission began work in Ceylon in 1944 to lay the groundwork for the country’s future government.
In October 1945, a new Ceylon constitution was drafted on the basis of proposals by the Soulbury Commission, but it did not provide for full independence for the island but retained it under British jurisdiction. The post of Governor-General was given to representatives of the Ceylon Society, but the head of the legislature was appointed by the English government. On 4 February 1948, the Dominion of Ceylon was officially established.
In 1972, a new constitution was adopted under which the country became a republic and its name was changed from «Ceylon» to «Sri Lanka».
