Yuriy Fedkovych was born in 8 August 1834 the family of poor civil servant Adalbert Fedkovich in the town of Storantse-Putilov in Austria-Hungary (now a settlement of urban type Putila of the Chernivtsi region). He studied at the Chernivtsi German Real School from 1846 to 1848, and later worked in Iasi and Piatra Niamtsa in Moldova from 1849 to 1852.

He served in 1852 - 1863 in Transylvania and in 1859 became a lieutenant, at the same time he participated in a campaign in Italy. After being dismissed from military service, Fedkovich worked in his native village, and was the school inspector of Vignitsky district in 1869 - 1872. Invited to Lviv, Fedkovich in 1872 - 1873 worked as an editor of the publishing house «Enlightenment» and the theater «Russian Conversation».

He spent his last years in Chernivtsi, where in 1885 - 1888 he was the editor of the newspaper «Bukovina». For services in the field of literature he was elected an honorary member of the Scientific Society named after. Taras Shevchenko. He died on 11 January 1888 in Chernivtsi, where he is buried in the Russian cemetery.
