Horse racing on a frozen lake in Switzerland.
The Arosa Horse Race on Snow is an annual winter equestrian event held in January in the Swiss sports and holiday resort of Arosa. The competitions have been held on the frozen Obersee since 1911 and are among the oldest horse races in Switzerland.
On 29 December 1910, the local hotelier’s association suggested introducing skijoring on site. On 13 January 1911, the Arosa Skijöring Club was founded under the chairmanship of Ms Richter von Waldsanatorium, and on 29 January 1911 the Skijöring Club was founded. In the same month the first race on the Obersee could be started, there were only workhorses from the Schanfigg at the start.
Soon the first thoroughbred horses appeared at the start, and with them the program was extended to flat and trotting races. As a result, the Skijöring Club was renamed "Arosa Racing Club" and it received new statutes. In the early years of the First World War, no races were held, but in 1917 those responsible resumed their activities.
Various Swiss racing teams used the opportunity for training and well-staffed competitions. In 1921, the club joined the Swiss Racing Federation. From 1926 to 1930 again no races could be carried out, but the racing club was created again in 1930. In 1931, a Concours Hippique was planned, which had to take place under very difficult new snow conditions.
